Understanding Tajweed: A Beginner's Guide

Tajweed is the science of reading the Quran correctly, giving every letter its due right in terms of pronunciation, characteristics, and articulation points. The word "Tajweed" comes from the Arabic root meaning "to improve" or "to make better."

Learning Tajweed is considered obligatory for every Muslim who recites the Quran. While perfecting it takes years of practice, understanding the basics can significantly improve your recitation from day one.

The fundamental rules include proper pronunciation of Arabic letters (Makharij al-Huroof), the characteristics of letters (Sifaat al-Huroof), rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween, rules of Meem Sakinah, and the rules of Madd (elongation).

Start by learning the Arabic alphabet and its proper pronunciation. Pay attention to letters that sound similar but have different articulation points, such as ح and ه, or ص and س. A qualified teacher can help you identify and correct common mistakes.

Practice regularly with short surahs you already know. Listen to renowned Qaris and try to imitate their pronunciation. Our app includes audio recitation that you can use as a guide for proper Tajweed.
